Food Intolerance

Food intolerances are completely reversible!  How great is that!
We can help your child enjoy foods they used to by strengthening their whole digestive and rebuilding their immune response.

Food intolerance are immune mediated reactions involving T-helper and T-regulatory immune cells produced in the Thymus gland. Unlike allergy that has a rapid onset and can be potentially life threatening, food intolerance are drawn out reactions that result in functional problems like poor appetite, tummy pain, diarrhoea, constipation, skin reactions, poor concentration, behaviour issues, sleep problems and fatigue.  The effects can be wide reaching and really make life uncomfortable.

It is important for the true cause of intolerances to be identified if you are to get positive long term results.  This is where natural medicine practitioners can help.  We have highly specialised and effective treatments that will help your child's wellbeing and overall health. In order to reverse food intolerances the following points must be addressed

1. Identify all food intolerances - and adjust diet accordingly.  This immediately eases the body and down regulates stress hormones and ongoing production of inflammatory mediators.   Your physician should be able to suggest other likely foods that are causing a problem.  Alternately IgG blood testing is an acceptable measure of food intolerance also.

2.Identify the cause and treat using therapeutic evidence-based natural medicines.

Common reactive foods
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Peanuts
  • Shellfish
  • Soy
  • Wheat
  • Diary
  • Artificial additives
  • Artificial colours and flavour
Food Sensitivity Symptoms:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhoea
  • Itchiness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Runny nose
  • Nausea
  • Congestion
  • Eczema flare-ups
Allergy and sensitivity testing is done by qualified professionals.  These include blood tests, skin prick, Vega, and Kinesiology.  Observing heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature can also be a valuable way to assess how the body copes after eating particular foods.

Food sensitivities and allergies can be helped by identifying and treating the underlying cause.  A qualified practitioner can help make a thorough assessment and implement a strategy to best treat the individual.  This is important since the causes of food intolerance can be many.

Treatment consists of a multi-factorial approach.

1.  Functional Testing -  IgG, IgE, Nutrient deficiency, Toxicity

2. The diet must be adjusted and changed to include low reactive and wholesome foods.  Processed, artificially sweetened and refined foods must be eliminated as should the use of damaged and trans fats since these only contribute to oxidation which is not health promoting.  Drinking water needs to be clean and as pure as possible.

3.  Nutritional medicine is used to help correct the internal imbalances that go hand in hand with food intolerance.  These need to be tailored to suit individual needs but include the use of essential fatty acids, mineral therapy, prebiotics and probiotics as well as glutamine and quercetin.  This phase allows repair work to begin and will settle down unregulated inflammation.

4.  Lifestyle & Environmental factors.  Home cleaning agents need to be changed to low reactive plant-based products.  Carpets in the home may needs to be replaced with floor boards or changed to natural fibre.  Home electrical meterbox and electronic devices can place stress of body systems and bedrooms may require re-arranging.  Adequete outdoor time should be set aside.  Children especially need to breath clean air that is not air conditioned.  They need 20 minutes of sunshine per day and they need to run around and be active.  Exercise helps support one of the main cleansing systems of the body, the lymphatic system which is responsible for filtering the return flow of lymphatic fluid in our body's and helps to support our immune system.  Poor lymphatic is associated with recurrent tonsilitis.

After some time depending on individual health people begin to feel and look better.  Their sympoms settle down and eventually go away.  Mothers are often astounded that their children are no longer ruddy faced and snotty all the time.  They spend less time with colds and frequent their doctor less.  Energy is improved and happiness and productivity follow.  School results often improve with less effort.  Life becomes easier and flows with a natural grace.  We have managed to rekindle the body's inate ability to self heal.  This is the essence of natural medicine.

ADHD/ADD

These commonly diagnosed conditions are developmental neurological disorders.  Behavioural disorders and learning disorders affect up to 20% of children.  ADD affects around 7% of school aged children.

ADHD has increased 400% in the past two decades!

Four Catastrophic Changes

Toxic Proliferation
Hydrocarbons
Heavy Metals - Mercury, Lead, Arsenic
Hormones  - zenoestrogens, farmed meats
Antibiotcs - human, animal and plant use
  1. Nutritional Deteriation
  2. Vaccination rates increasing
  3. Reduced ability to detoxify

Conditions like ADD/ADHD are rooted in a body that is overloaded with toxins, has excessive inflammation and oxidative stress and is compromised by immune incompetence and a reduced ability to detoxify.  Science is now understanding the link between the gut and the brain in these conditions.

Behavioural issues usually have multiple causes including physiological, mental / emotional, environmental and sociological.  Some examples include chronic stress, peer pressure, low nuerotransmitters, poor digestive function (assimilation and nutrient absorption) and toxicity.

The role of natural medicine is to encourage repair of the digestive system and help return function to key systems in the body.  It is not simply good enough to offer medicationor natural remedies that will sedate or block the propensity of hyperactive behaviour or just stimulate a more attentive mind.  The condition runs much deeper than that and requires a multifaceted integrative approach to achieve success.

Natural medicine can address many of the physiological factors and functional aspects of the condition.  Assessment of your child must be thorough and comprehensive with a complete and detailed history. This is imperative into understanding what is causing and sustaining your child’s condition.

Natural medicine has the potential to act as a stand-alone treatment or as an adjunct to conventional treatment.  Many parents feel relived to know that their children can be helped in an integrative manner.

Baby Eczema

Eczema is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin. It presents as a red, itchy, weeping or dry condition commonly affecting the inner elbows and behind the knees.  It can be most uncomfortable for children and young babies affecting sleep and overall quality of life.  Parents who would like to resolve their child’s eczema would be wise to consider the virtues of holistic natural medicine.

Natural medicine can provide symptomatic relief and address the underlying causes of eczema.  There is a correlation between poorly treated eczema and the development of asthma and allergy later in life.  You can significantly reduce the possibility of your child developing asthma and allergy by treating the underlying causes.

What to expect from teatment
  • A Detailed  consultation to gather all relevent history and to make a clinical assessment of additional testing.
  • Assessment of environmental factors that may be contributing to the problem.
  • Dietary suggestions with explanations of using or avoiding particular foods.
  • A treatment plan outlining short-term and long-term goals along with what to expect
  • Treatment of symptoms and underlying causes using appropriate medicines to match your child’s needs. For example herbal medicine, topical lotions, nutrient and probiotic therapy and homoeopathy.  These can only be determined after discussing your child’s health with you.
  • The use of medicines with good research and clinical effectiveness.  For example, research confirms the efficacy of nutritional medicine in eczema such as therapeutic omega 3, probiotics and nutrients such as B12 and zinc.  Traditional herbal medicine has also demonstrated its value in clinical settings giving effective and lasting results.

Cold & Flu

What causes cold and flu?
Pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and funghi are the usual culprits involved in acute immune events.  They are usually spread via airbourne means and result in common symptoms including sore throat, coughs and generalized congestion.  Did you know that our immune system is hinged to other body systems?  85% of our adaptive immune cells reside in our digestive tract.  This means that unresolved digestive issues may increase one's suceptibility to catching colds and flu.  Poor quality sleep, high stress levels and too much indoor activity can also increase our chances of getting a cold.

How do we treat colds and flu?
We can help improve your symptoms as fast as conventional approaches....without unwanted side effects We only use the very best quality herbal medicine, nutritional supplements and mineral therapy.  At Eluvi, you get the added benefit of comprehensive case taking so that colds and flu become less prevailent.  Many patients with recurrent and long-standing immune issues find their health improves greatly with a personally tailored approach.  Scientific evidence now confirms the effectiveness of herbal extracts such asEchinacea and Elderflower as well as Vitamin D and omega 3 at boosting the immune system.

What can I do to get well and stay well?

Here are some super dooper tips to beat winter colds and flu's with Natures Super foods.

Now that Wintertime is upon us it is a good opportunity to enhance our family's immune systems using a couple of key foods.

Breakfast: Steaming hot porridge served with stewed fruits and toasted almonds drizzled with honey.  Porridge is packed with key nutrients to support our energy and nervous system.  It is simple to digest and makes a great nutritious start to the day.

Bust out the Citrus fruit wherever possible.  Start the day with lemon juice in warm water or squeeze a couple of oranges.  Lemon added to many foods especially green leafy veggies will help your body absorb the iron, a key mineral for your immune system.

Stews and Soups: make for hearty nutritious main meals.  Whether it be a classic minestrone, Sicilian lamb stew with polenta or an Asian inspired numbers such as Tom Yum, Rotti Channi, or Curry Laksa.  These are easy to digest especially if slowly cooked and importantly warming to our body.

Digestive Complaints

"All Diseases Begin in the Gut”. Hippocrates 460-370 BC

Up to 85% of our addaptive immune response is hinged to our digestive system.  After we ingest food and stomach acids beging the breakdown of food it is transferred to the small intestines where the process of absorption begins. The last three fifths of the small intestine contain large numbers of lymph nodes called Peyer's patches.  These nodes play a vital role in our immune function.

  • Lymph nodes in the small intestine help remove bacteria, viruses, fungi, dead cells (especially cancerous cells) and various toxins.
  • Lymph nodes produce specific immune cells called lymphocytes

Signs and Conditions relating to poor gut function:
  • Chronic diarrhoea
  • Eczema
  •  Autism
  • Constipation
  • Asthma
  • IBS
  • Poor immunity
  • Food Intolerance
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Fatigue
  • Bloating
  • Blood / Mucous in the stool
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Crohn's disease
  • Undigested food in the stool
Three Groups of Microflora
  • Essential and beneficial flora - essential for strong robust immune function
  • Opportunistic flora - up to 500 various species unique to individual. Kept in balance by beneficial flora
  • Transitional flora - taken in via food and drink.  These are controlled by a healthy gut wall.

The beneficial flora provide our gut wall with a robust immune response.  They are able to neutralise toxic  nitrates, indoles, phenols, inactivate histamine and chelate heavy metals and other poisons.  The cell walls of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) are also able to absorb many carcinogenic substances.

Damage to microflora leads to reduced immune response and can present as recurring tummy pains.
  • Gut wall damage
  • Open to invasion from viruses (from vaccinations), bacteria, toxins, fungi, parasites
  • Malnutrition: a reduced ability to absorb nutrients when beneficial flora and gut wall is compromised
  • Prone to infection, hypersensitivity, skin conditions, fatigue and so on............

Did you know?? It takes up to 10 years for a child’s digestive tract to resemble that of an adult?

There are over 10 trillion cells in your child’s digestive tract called enterocytes?

These enterocytes turn-over more rapidly than any other cells in the body.  Some of their functions include immune responses, nutrient absorption and neurotransmitter function.

One reason why children go off their food when ill is that their gut-based immune system is under attack.  For a child to be robust and healthy they must have a well balanced diet and be absorbing the nutrients across the gut wall. A healthy gut will keep your child bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for a long time.  An unhealthy gut can result in multiple problems affecting the brain, immune response and nutrient status.

From time to time it can be useful to ensure your child’s digestive function is top notch especially given the plasticity of this body system.  Issues such as cravings, poor appetite, failure to thrive, poor concentration and lowered immunity can stem from digestive function.
